Silicon Production
Silicon (Si) is produced by removing two Oxygen atoms from Silica (SiO2), typically through the SIEMENS process, which melts Silica, mixed with carbon and wood chips at a temperature of 4,000 Fahrenheit degrees, producing Silicon and Carbon Monoxide pollution.
An amazing breakthrough in the world’s Silicon Industry!
We are very proud of our Geologist Dr. Johan Hattingh, Ph.D.
He has developed a new approach to the extraction of silicon (Si) from high purity quartz (Silica or SiO2).
Dr. Hattingh has created and successfully tested at bench scale level a technology that allows producing Silicon using hydro-metallurgical instead of pyro-metallurgical processes. This technique employs a series of standard leaching and solvent extraction principles for the extraction of ultra-high purity Silicon, instead of the conventional energy consuming high-temperature arc furnace process. Future plans in Silica1, associated with Dr. Hattingh, are to scale this process up to a full industrial plant that will produce silicon suitable for the high-grade market, at a fraction of the actual costs of the SIEMENS process.
